Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound honor winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his latest record the album was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots played in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation assisted venues that were facing imminent closure due to challenges arising from floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in modernizing infrastructure and gear that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

In Pulp earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, vocalist the singer announced that the act would give their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her prize among multiple charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Two years ago, they gave their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients they gave their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our success touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had protected a couple of local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the second in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by a national body and music fans who acquire "shares" in the venues.
