Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
