Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
