Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
